The Fourth Workshop on Energy Efficiency and Clean Development of China Cement Industry

“The Fourth Workshop on Energy Efficiency and Clean Development of China Cement Industry”, organized by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and China Cement Association (CCA) and sponsored by China Building Materials Academy (CBMA) was held from January 21-22, 2010 in Beijing. The workshop got strong supports and active cooperation from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Officials and experts from METI Japan Cement Association and JETRO attended the workshop and the Japanese experts gave lectures to the Chinese participants. About 50 participants from China cement companies, universities and research institutes as well as journalists participated in this workshop.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. SUI Tongbo, Vice-President of CBMA. Mr. LIU Ming, Division Director of Department of Industry of NDRC, Mr. Fumio Yamashita from METI and Mr. KONG Xiangzhong, Secretary-General of CCA attended and addressed at the meeting.

As the world’s largest cement producer and consumer, China cement output takes up nearly half of the world cement output. On the one hand, cement industry makes contribution to economic development. On the other hand, as an energy and resources intensive industry, cement production consumes large amount of non-renewable resources and energy and emits quantities of CO2. Facing threats from global warming and environment pollution, Chinese government proactively makes great efforts to curb climate change and sets the new target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 40-45 percent by 2020 from the 2005 level. Therefore, the responsibility of energy saving and emission reduction for cement industry is rather heavy.

CSI-Cement CO2 Protocol Tool is an international CO2 calculation tool which is widely adopted by cement industry. Organizing such workshop is a significant action for cement industry’s structural adjustment and energy saving and emission reduction and lays foundation for implementing energy efficiency identification for cement industry.

From January 21st to 22nd, experts from Japan explained the use of CSI tool and its updated version for participants. Participants from cement companies learned the advanced international technologies and exchanged energy saving and emission reduction experience with the opportunity. Participants were issued certificates by Japanese experts at the end of the workshop and spoke highly of Japanese experts’ expertise and diligent work.
