China Building Materials Academy (CBMA), founded in 1950, is the largest comprehensive research organization in China in the field of building materials and inorganic non-metallic materials. CBMA expanded its institutional and academic capacity in January, 2006 by integrating another 12 institutes and companies, including Hefei Cement Research & Design Institute, Bengbu Design & Research Institute for Glass Industry, Harbin Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) Institute, China New Building Materials Industry Hangzhou Design & Research Institute, Qinhuangdao Glass Industry Research & Design Institute, Xi'an Research and Design Institute of Wall & Roof Materials, Xianyang Research & Design Institute of Ceramics, Hangzhou Project & Research Institute of Electro-mechanic in Light Industry, The Research Institute for Automation of Light Industry, Horological Research Institute of Light Industry, Mechanic & Design Institute of Light Industry and CNBM Waterproof Materials Corp.It consists of more than 3000 scientific researchers. Of them, more than 1200 are senior professionals, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. CBMA is among the first group of institutes authorized by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council to award Master's degree and Doctorate. Post doctoral station has also been established in the Academy.

       With more than 50 years' effort in this field, CBMA, as a leading research organization in China, has completed more than 2700 national and ministerial level key research projects, about 500 ministerial and higher level awards have been granted by government, including over 100 national prizes. These advanced achievements have greatly contributed to the technical advancement and structural regulation of Chinese building materials industry and thus to the development of national economy.

      CBMA has integrated 13 institutes, not only in the area of inorganic non-metallic materials such as cement, glass, ceramics, new building materials, housing materials, and other inorganic nonmetallic new materials, but also in the area of electromechanical automation and precision manufacturing. Under CBMA affiliated many government-authorized organizations, include: 1 state-level key laboratory, 3 ministerial-level key laboratories, 2 national engineering centers, 1 ministerial-level engineering center, 5 UN technology development and promotion centers, 3 national industrial productivity center, 11 national standardization technical committees, 30state-level and ministerial-level quality supervision & testing centers and more than 20 branch committees of China Building Materials Federation and Chinese Ceramic Society.

      Under CBMA also affiliated a number of professional high-tech companies including stocked company "Ruitai", conducting the R&D, production & sales, engineering design & contract for materials and products, automation and equipment etc. to promote the diffusion and industrialization of the technical achievements, and the overall capacity and capability are therefore strengthened.

      CBMA, as a state-owned leading R&D institute, will act as the national R&D platform for key projects in building materials and new materials industry, R&D platform for advanced key technologies in building materials industry, supporting platform for technical innovations for CNBM enterprises, industrialization platform for high-tech building materials and new materials products, training platform for senior scientific researchers for building materials industry, and international platform for academic and technical exchange on building materials and new materials. CBMA will constantly enhance its capability on self-innovation, closely cooperate with enterprises and undertake the mission of leading the technical progress, structural regulation and industrial improvement, and thus to promote the sustainable development of building materials industry.
