The predecessor of CBMA can be traced back to North China Ceramic Institute founded in October, 1950, which was the first scientific institution in building materials field of new China. In 1999, CBMA went through the transition and became a technology enterprise; in 2004, CBMA reorganized with China National Building Material
Group (CNBM); in 2006, CBMA integrated 12 research and design institutes and turned into the largest comprehensive research, development and design conglomerate in China, covering cement, concrete, wall material, glass, ceramics, refractory and new materials. Bringing together the first-class technical team including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts from “Recruitment Program of Global Experts” and other experts and scholars, CBMA became the largest, most powerful research and development center in China's building materials and inorganic non-metallic area.
CBMA consists of more than 3000 scientific researchers. Of them, more than 1200 are senior professionals, including one academician of the China Academy of Engineering. CBMA is among the first group of institutes authorized by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council to award Master’s degree and Doctorate. Post doctoral station has also been established in the Academy.
CBMA has completed more than 3100 national and ministerial level research projects, among which about 1000 provincial & ministerial and higher level awards have been granted by the government including over 150 national prizes, and has formulated and revised more than 1200 national and industrial standards. These achievements have contributed to the development of national economy. CBMA has been known as “the cradle and birthplace of building materials science and technology of New China”. In recent years, CBMA has gradually formed a development pattern of scientific research and development, science and technology industry, test and certification for the whole. CBMA has undertaken a large number of national significant S&T research programs including those in the 973 Plan, the 863 Plan, and National Key Technology R&D Program. The resulting technologies have been widely used by many national key projects such as the Olympic Project, Shenzhou Project, the Three Gorges Project, etc., highly promoting the technology progress of building materials industry as well as energy-saving and emission reduction. Achievement industrialization has proved highly successful: two listed companies were spun off from CBMA, and many S&T industrial parks were established. CBMA successfully bid to host the ICCC and issued the first national industrial standard. CBMA has become the main subject to undertake national S&T mission in the building material industry, the main power of industry technology innovation and become an important window to show the S&T strength of our country, the industry, and the group (CNBM).
